The producers of the popular animated show The Simpson “React”: Characters like Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, Dr. Hibbert and Carl Carlson will no longer be played, in terms of voice, by white actors.
“Later, The Simpson they will no longer have white actors to play non-white characters, ”confirmed the managers of the production through a statement, in the context in which racism is being discussed in the media and in the entertainment industry.
Previously, the animated series created in 1989 faced criticism for reinforcing racist stereotypes. Also, in January 2020, actor Hank Azaria said he would no longer lend his voice to the character of Apu, an immigrant in charge of a grocery store.
“All we know is that I will not continue to make that voice, not if there is no way in which I will undergo a transition,” the actor said at the time.
What is not clear in the producers’ communication is whether Apu or other criticized creations will continue to appear in the popular animated series.
In addition to Apu, other non-white characters played by white actors include Carl Carlson (Azaria) and the Simpson family’s GP, Dr. Hibbert (Harry Shearer).
In a similar decision, Mike Henry said he would stop lending his voice to Cleveland Brown, an African-American character from Family guy: “People of color must play characters of color,” said the actor.
In almost the same sense, Kristen Bell said that it was enough with the character of Molly, from the animated musical series Central park, from Apple TV Plus.
